    Commission opens position for hire, hears from residents

    Members of the Texas County Commission handled several matters during meetings May 1 – 2.

    Members:

    • Hosted the annual Government Days at the justice center to educate area 8th graders on county government. Schools represented were Cabool, Raymondville, Success and Summersville.
    • Were presented a letter from Debbie James, assessor, to remove Shannon Harris from payroll effective May 1.
    • Set a Board of Equalization meeting for Wednesday, July 17.
    • Acknowledged hiring a part-time individual in the clerk’s office.
    • Attended an area agricultural tour at Zimmerman’s Quality Meats in Summersville for U.S. Rep. Jason Smith Friday, May 3.

    In other business, commissioners heard from:

    • Sheriff Scott Lindsey on litigation and a deputy that hit a deer.
    • Marjorie Stroup, Alicia Williams and Sarah Holson from the clerk’s office.
    • Grant Wilson, U.S. Rep. Jason Smith’s office, on area matters.
    • Bill Bridges and Ross Richardson, TCMH, on hospital finances and the open trustee position.
    • Mike Knapp, Burdine Township, on recent rainfall and road conditions in the township.
    • Ken Keele about his tax bill.
    • Debbie James, Lindsay Koch and Tammy Cantrell on the new IT services.
    • Residents on road issues in Sargent Township.
    • David Scantlin concerning storm damage on township roads.
    • Bryan Reed concerning a Klotz Drive permit for an approach on U.S. 63.
    • Kent Edge, SEMA regional director, concerning assistance for storm damage on roads.
