Scranton officials plan to repeal residency requirement
The City of Scranton plans to repeal a 4 decades long residency requirement that requires municipal employees to live in the Electric City. According to reports, Mayor Paige Gebhardt Cognetti sent Scranton City Council a proposed ordinance to repeal the residency requirement across the board, for all city employees, including administrative employees not in any union. Mayor Cognetti said the residency requirement is impeding the city's ability to retain and attract quality employees to the City of Scranton. Council on Tuesday voted 3-2, with President Gerald Smurl, Bill King and Jessica Rothchild all in favor of the repeal, and Mark McAndrew and Tom Schuster opposed.
One person faces attempted homicide charges in a Tioga County, Pa. shooting
Pennsylvania State Police have charged a 69-year-old man with attempted homicide in a shooting that injured one person in Tioga County Thursday. Mansfield-based troopers were dispatched at about 4:30 p.m. to 1868 E. Lawrence Road, Jackson Township, where state police said a 45-year-old male sustained at least one gunshot wound.

Three days of powerful storms cut power to thousands of properties in the Lehigh Valley this week. And the heat was unrelenting before finally becoming seasonable Thursday. A representative of PPL Electric Utilities said Thursday the company had restored power to some 82,000 customers across its Pennsylvania territory since Monday. As of Thursday afternoon, PPL reported 2,268 outages among 1,524,524 customers in 18 counties, including 399 outages in Lehigh County paired with 53 in Northampton County. The Allentown-based utility on Wednesday reported just more than 1,000 outages in Lehigh and Northampton. PPL services 29 counties.
