The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution designated Oct. 11, 2024, as a National Day of Service.

Nine Daughters from the Sun City NSDAR Agua Fria Chapter joined the Sun City Caring Angels organization to work together in a conservation effort to flatten plastic bags, cut them into strips, link the strips together and roll the strips into plarn balls. Some volunteers learned how to crochet the plarn into sleeping mats.

The Caring Angels donate a plastic sleeping mat along with a backpack of items to the Veterans First organization for homeless veterans in the Phoenix, Prescott and Tucson area.

Each mat takes 720 bags, 86 hours and 45 minutes to make. So far 180,000 bags have been recycled and kept out of landfills and 250 mats have been made by the Caring Angels volunteers. They accept donations of plastic bags as well as donations for backpacks such as water bottles, snacks, small containers of soap, shampoo and other personal hygiene products.

Everyone is always welcome to join this group of volunteers. Email Jody at yarning8@cox.net. Visit the Agua Fria Chapter at aguafria.arizonadar.org.
