Relay event raises more than $65,000 in Sun City West

More than 150 participants and visitors gathered Feb. 18 for the 12th American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Sun City West’s Beardsley Park.

Joyce Sapik gave an inspiring speech as she told of surviving stage four ovarian cancer, survivors did a victory lap around the track and there was a dinner provided by Sardella’s. Laura Hankin talked about the importance of the day, followed by a silent walk to view the hundreds of lit luminaria honoring those who lost, won or are fighting cancer.

Most importantly, it was a day to raise funds to support cancer research and patients in need. Many came out to support the cause, buy raffle tickets, donate money and dedicate luminaria—and more than $65,000 was raised.

Peoria Nissan, Sun Canyon Bank, Reunion Rehabilitation Hospital-Peoria, Bob’s Variety, the Sun City West Foundation, KSCW broadcast club, and the Recreation Centers of Sun City West helped make this event possible.
