Recreation Centers of Sun City West General Manager Bill Schwind was hired more than five years ago, and is now resigning effective March 22. In a press release from association officials, Schwind said after he consulted with his family he made the decision to leave public administration and pursue other interests.

“I have nothing but thanks and appreciation for the wonderful opportunity that the Recreation Centers of Sun City West has provided us,” Schwind said in a press release from the association. “The professional management team I have had the pleasure of working with are extremely proficient and each are experts in their fields. That being said, the Association will remain in good hands during your search and selection of my successor.”

Efforts to reach out to current governing board members were attempted; however, in an email from Recreation Centers of Sun City West General Services Officer Katy O’Grady, she said, “Because the general manager resignation is a personnel matter, we do not have further comment on it”.

Governing board candidate Bud Meador said, in his opinion, an effective general manager must be willing to listen to people. To be effective the general manager must be approachable and have the impression of being intelligently receptive and give a fair and prudent evaluation with a data based solution.

Dennis Horvath, board candidate for the upcoming election, stated in an email he was shocked and did not see this resignation coming, adding that Schwind was resigning for personal reasons and, taking him at his word, Horvath can only wish him well.

Looking ahead, the release from the association said plans for filling this new vacancy will be announced in the coming weeks. The Association’s Management Team will work with the board to keep operations running smoothly in the meantime.

According to Bylaw 7.02, the president with the consent of the governing board shall establish a selection committee and chairperson for the purpose of identifying potential candidates for the position of general manager. The policy states the committee must have no fewer than seven owner members and no more than two can be on the governing board, as well as an owner member who is not a director of the governing board will serve as chairman. The committee is responsible for submitting no fewer than three qualified candidates to the governing board for review and selection and to appoint a general manager, six affirmative votes or more must be in place.

Schwind started with the Association in January 2019, succeeding former General Manager Mike Whiting, who served for 15 years. The board conducted a national search at that time to fill the vacancy.
