Estrella Daughters honor Vietnam veterans in Sun City West

March 29 is the official Vietnam Veterans Day but the Estrella Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution observed it early by inviting Vietnam veterans to the chapter’s March 14 meeting.

Regent Nancy Nixon greeted each of the 12 veterans and thanked them by saying, “on behalf of a grateful nation, thank you for your service and sacrifice.” Nine veterans were also presented with certificates of appreciation for their service and lapel pins embossed on the back, closest to the heart, with: “A grateful Nation Thanks and Honors You.” The other three veterans (one, Carolyn Meade, a chapter member) had been previously awarded the lapel pin and certificate.

Estrella Chapter is a commemorative partner with the United States Vietnam War Commemoration that was authorized by Congress, established under the secretary of defense and launched by President Obama in 2012. The signing of the initial proclamation marked the 50th anniversary of the departure of the last American troops from Vietnam — March 29, 1973. The commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War commenced May 28, 2012 and extends through Nov. 11, 2025. Presidents Trump and Biden each issued a proclamation of confirmation. Additionally, the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 was signed into law by President Trump, designating every March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

The veterans, their families, chapter members took part in a pizza party following the award ceremony.
