Beth Emeth Congregation, 13702 W. Meeker Blvd., hosted a special service May 13 followed by an Israeli dinner to celebrate Israel’s Independence Day.

In Israel, Independence Day is proceeded by Yom Ha’Zikaron, a day remembering the fallen soldiers. There is a loud blast marking a moment of silence. When the sirens blast, people stop whereever they are, even traffic on the freeway comes to a stop.

The congregation started with Mincha, the afternoon prayer service, after which they had the blowing of the shofar calling everyone to attention, followed by a moment of silence. Hazzan Lev gave his remarks and the group concluded with the singing of Hatikvah, Israel’s national anthem.

Pitas came from a bakery in Israel. There was felafel, hummus, tahini, Israeli salad, green salad, beets, pickle, olives, coleslaw, couscous, roasted veggies and egg salad made with caramelized onions. Dessert featured Halavah, chocolate covered strawberries, fruit and cake with beverages of choice.

Half of the proceeds from the dinner — more than $200 plus an added donation of $327 — will be sent to Feed Israel, serving the needy and those fighting hunger.
