Murphy: Comments targeting tennis unwarranted

Dudley Gibson’s opinion, “We do not need all the tennis courts at Johnson as most sit idle most of the time,” is just biased and wrong. As a scheduler for 25 to 30 tennis players over the last 20 years, I can assure you that most all of the tennis courts are used between 8 a.m. and noon. As I’m sure Dudley knows, all of our facilities — tennis, pickleball, bocce, golf and platform — see less activity during the heat of the afternoon, so for Dudley to single out tennis is just in poor taste.

I also heard that the Rec board offered to make Kuentz a fully pickelball facility, with all new surfaces at the cost of $600,000, and pickleball turned it down. Unlike pickleball members, who fought the resurfacing of the tennis courts, tennis players did not object to this expense. I would go one step further and fully enclose Kuentz courts, with air conditioning. You could play all summer and Sun City West would have a premiere pickleball facility. Surely you couldn’t turn that offer down, Dudley.
