The members of Scrapbooking, Papercrafts, & More have multiple opportunities to make one-of-a-kind card designs by learning new artistic techniques from their fellow members.

Heat embossing is an age-old technique originally found solely on manufactured cards. In the last 25-plus years products eventually became available for the home-crafter to achieve similar raised glossy words and images on their hand-crafted cards.

Bev McClendon recently demonstrated how to enhance cards by heat embossing greetings and images on cardstock using ink with colored powders made of miniscule plastic grains. While the technique is not new to many, it never ceases to amaze those who are new to embossing and frequently, it renews interest in those familiar with the decorative technique.

McClendon demonstrated how embossed results may be altered depending on the color of ink used in combination with the color of the powder; the opacity or translucency of the ink will also affect the end result.

Learn how to make greeting cards, papercrafts and scrapbooks (traditional or digital) by joining SPAM in the Beardsley center’s Agave Room on Thursdays (10 a.m.-3 p.m.), Fridays (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) and Saturdays (10 a.m.-5 p.m.).
