Warren of Sun City West died of natural causes on June 25, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. A Korean War Army veteran, retired Bell System engineer and devoted family patriarch, Warren’s commitment to building and fixing things and making a positive impact on others did not come to an end with his death. Warren was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Jean Priest Sax, in 2020. His legacy will be honored by his children, Cynthia (Jon Thom) Sax, Kenneth (Cathy) Sax, and Pamela Sax; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who are committed to carrying forward his optimism, sense of humor, and service to others.
Warren grew up in Queens, New York, where he was born in 1929. At the age of 17, he began what came to be a 42-year career with the Bell System, starting as a messenger with Western Electric. Soon after, he was accepted into the engineering college at The Cooper Union. His education was interrupted when he enlisted into the Army and served two tours of duty including Korea in the 2nd Infantry Division. Warren eventually finished his Cooper Union engineering degree at night school, marrying Jean Priest in 1957, and starting their family.
As Warren’s career progressed, their family life was defined by eight corporate moves. In spite of his increasing professional commitments, Warren was ahead of his times in terms of his active engagement in childrearing and household matters. He instituted many of the family’s fondest traditions: road trips to interesting sites regardless of where the family resided, annual summer vacations at the beach, including the family favorite of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, and family meetings called when important decisions were to be announced. He was an avid golfer and skier, enjoyed woodworking, reading, fine dining, and NY Times crossword puzzles. Warren was an active member of the Episcopal Church, most recently Church of the Advent in Sun City West, AZ, where he served since 1991 as a faithful lay worship leader, and was actively involved in many ministries, including the Men’s Club, Vestry, Stewardship campaigns, and outreach ministries.
Plans for a memorial service will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, Warren’s family requests that memorial donations be made to The Cooper Union Albert Nerken School of Engineering (www.cooper.edu) or the Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org.
