Edina boys open season in track triangular

    2024-04-09

Edina High’s boys track and field team opened the season short-handed, due to spring break, in a Lake Conference triangular with St. Michael-Albertville and Eden Prairie April 5 at Kuhlman Field.

All three teams basically used the meet as a time trial. And unlike most meets held in early April, the competition included the full complement of field events.

The highlight of the meet for the Hornet boys was a victory in the high jump by senior Tate Rasmussen, who cleared 6 feet, 2 inches. Teammate Khalil Kaba took fifth place in the event.

Senior Nick Presthus, a state-meet competitor last spring, won the triple jump by almost five feet with a best of 43 feet, 8 inches. Hornet senior Cullen Kelly added a third-place finish.

Edina showed strength in the shot put with juniors Gage Holmberg and Ryan Zentner placing second and third. Gabriel Coleman, another Hornet junior, took fourth place in the discus.

Owen McLain had the best long jump of the day for Edina, placing seventh with a best of 18 feet, 1 inch.

In the running events, Edina junior Eduardo Usandivaras showed great promise. He took third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.49 seconds. Teammate Nicholas Giles was seventh in 11.70. Usandivaras took fifth in the 200 in 23.64.

Edina had a good performance in the 400 with junior Sven Freeland taking second place in 55.72. Junior Allen Mullin of the Hornets added an eighth place. Senior Dylan Magnuson led Edina in the 800 with a ninth place.

Sophomore Alexander Moore ran sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles and was sixth in the 300 intermediates. Also in the 300 intermediates, Edina had a fifth place from Aayush Kaushal.

Edina finished third in the team standings during the first outdoor meet of the season. Eden Prairie edged St. Michael-Albertville 65-60 in the race for first place. The Hornets scored 28 points.
