    Edina girls top Tonka for aquatics title

    As usual, the Lake Conference girls aquatics title came down to a dual meet between Edina and Minnetonka.

    On Sept. 24, Edina took the title by winning 100-86. The meet went down to the last race of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Edina took first place and added a third place to wrap up the victory.

    The meet began with an Edina victory in the 200-yard medley relay. Bobbi Simmons, Sophie Katz, Siggy Nymo and Libbi McCarthy posted a winning time of 1:46.83. Minnetonka took second place in 1:48.18 with the foursome of Henley Hatzung, Kendall Schindler, Annika Graham and Gracie Bartholomew. Minntonka came in third with Lauren Killelea, Mikayla Kangas, Sarah Hurley and Lydia Cameron.

    Edina’s Macy Malinski won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.88 with Annabelle Wentzel and Claire Wilkey of the Skippers placing second and third.

    Edina ninth-grader Siggy Nymo won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.57. Hornet teammate Simmons placed second and Brooke Olson of Minnetonka took third place.

    Defending state champ Libbi McCarthy gave Edina first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.97. Hatzung and Bartholomew of Minnetonka placed second and third.

    Zara Karimi scored 257.25 to easily win diving. Claire Friberg of Minnetonka was second with Edina’s Madeleine Frey taking third.

    Siggy Nymo earned her second individual win of the meet in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 55.09 was less than a second faster than Minnetonka’s Wentzel, who went 55.74. Olson of Minnetonka took third.

    McCarthy joined Siggy Nymo as a double winner with her time of 52.23 in the 100 freestyle. Wilkey of Minnetonka was next in 52.55 and Bartholomew added a third place for the Skippers.

    Edina took first and second places in the 500 freestyle with Malinski swimming 5:07.26 and Frances Muir following in 5:11.86. Third place went to Stella Suchy of Minnetonka.

    Minnetonka came up with a crucial win in the 200 freestyle relay with Wentzel, Graham, Hatzung and Wilkey swimming 1:38.20. There was a dead heat for second place, featuring Bartholomew, Hurley, Rebecca Moss and Schindler of the Skippers and Kaya Ygona, Malinski, Audrey Peterson and Anja Nymo of the Hornets.

    Simmons gave Edina first place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.55. Morgan Raether and Hatzung of Minnetonka picked off second and third place.

    Both teams realized that the meet would be decided in the last two races - the 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay.

    Schindler gave Minnetonka first place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.80. Edina was able to take the next four places with Taylor Thompson, Ellie Katz and Sophie Katz.

    Edina took the lead in the 400 free relay and finished more than six seconds ahead of the Skippers. Malinski, Simmons, Siggy Nymo and McCarthy formed the winning foursome in 3:32.76. Minntonka’s Wilkey, Raether, Cameron and Wentzel took second place. Edina was third with Ally Hahn, Anja Nymo, Muir and Peterson.
