Auburn nears end of school budget process, proposing roughly 5% increase
AUBURN — School Committee members have weighed several factors driving up the 2024-25 budget, resulting in a proposal that includes more staff cuts. So far, the recommended budget is $62.23 million, a 5.4% increase compared to last year’s budget. If approved, it would result in a property tax rate of $9.24 per $1,000 of assessed value, increasing the tax bill for a $150,000 home by $70.97 based on current assessed values, according to calculations by School Department staff.

Millions across the country and world will look to the skies Monday to behold what has shaped and inspired science and many religions since the dawn of man. For the first time in Maine since July 20, 1963, the moon will pass perfectly between the Earth and Sun in a total solar eclipse. Maine’s slice of the celestial phenomena — the 3.5-minute totality — will start at 3:28 for those watching on Maine’s western border and end at 3:35 p.m. for those on Maine’s eastern edge, as the eclipse crosses the top half of the state. The whole eclipse — starting when the moon first begins obscuring the sun — will last about 2.5 hours.

LEWISTON — The LA Metro Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of the organization’s 2024 annual awards. The Ray Geiger Chamber Champion award — the highest honor — goes to Mark Adam, president and CEO of Sebago Technics Inc., an engineering and land development firm. The award is presented to an individual who has invested a great deal of time, energy and resources into furthering the LA Metro Chamber’s mission and working toward bettering the communities.
Miller Fitness replaces Orange Circuit Fitness in the Auburn Mall
Less than one month after Orange Circuit Fitness packed up and left the Auburn Mall, Miller Fitness has moved right in. Owner Curtis Miller tells The Buzz that renovation is already underway and that they hope to open by late May. The Auburn Mall will be the Maine-based fitness chain’s eighth location and will be the fourth location to open since May 2022. The first Miller Fitness gym opened in Skowhegan in 2017.
