Lewiston School Committee agrees to use more from fund balance to offset tax impact
LEWISTON — The School Committee reversed course at Monday’s special meeting and approved using about $1 million more from the fund balance to further offset the proposed school budget, along with a few more cuts. The vote was 5-3. After several teachers and staff gave impassioned speeches against the laundry list of potential staffing cuts compiled by Superintendent Jake Langlais, many of them filled positions, committee members decided to use $1.1 million more from the fund balance and make minor cuts elsewhere.

Turner home destroyed by fire Sunday
TURNER — A home on Upper Street was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon while the owners were on vacation, Turner Deputy Fire Chief Michael Nemi said. The recently constructed home at 408 Upper St. had reinforced concrete walls and eight inches of blown-in insulation throughout which acted “almost like gasoline” and was impossible to get to, he said. The attached garage also had two fully finished rooms, one a home theater which had added insulation, he said.
