Crusaders defeat Stars in three

The No. 2 ranked Mayer Lutheran volleyball team defeated No. 10 Southwest Christian in straight sets last Tuesday, winning 25-22, 25-14, 25-17.

“A fun-filled night filled the Mayer Lutheran gym tonight,” coach Joelle Grimsley said. “Tonight, we celebrated and recognized our coaches and players that are involved in our Faith based High Voltage Club. High Voltage has been around for 33 years and invites girls from all areas to participate. We strongly believe in working to accommodate girls that want to be involved in three sports.”

The Crusaders came out strong in set one. Hallie and Mari led the team with four kills each while Izzy had 11 assists using many of her hitters

“The Crusaders did not make many mistakes in this first set,” said Grimsley. “The Crusader defense was on top of their match tonight.”

In set two, the Crusaders stepped up their set taking control of the set and playing disciplined defense. Ellie served 6 — 6 with three assists. Courtney led the team with four kills while Clara led the team with five digs.

In set three, Mayer Lutheran continued to play with focus to close out the match.

“Again, the Crusaders stayed on task and knew that we could finish this match,” said Grimsley.

Izzy led the team with four kills while Marley and Mari each had three kills. Olivia and Izzy each had four assists to keep the offense rolling.

“This was a great match tonight for the Crusaders,” said Grimsley. “The team stayed focused and did not allow the Stars to have many runs throughout the entire match. It has been fun to see these girls starting to apply what is being worked on during our practices.”
