Brooklyn Center asks voters to approve sales tax to fix ‘antiquated’ community center
After years of planning and outreach, Brooklyn Center officials have outlined a new vision for the city’s community center. When residents head to the polls in November, they will decide if the multi-million dollar project moves forward. If voters approve, Brooklyn Center would impose a new 0.5% local sales tax to fund various additions to the community center: new gymnasiums, an indoor track and a teen center to name a few. Champlin Park-alum Josiah Strong has signed his first professional contract as a basketball player, joining Bosnian team HKK Siroki ahead of the 2024/25 season. Chickens move to 4040 Regent Avenue North
Eggs and entertainment: Brynn Okeson plans to keep four chickens at 4040 Regent Avenue North, Robbinsdale. Per city code, a person keeping or maintaining more than two chickens must obtain a permit and invite neighbors to a public hearing regarding said permit. The resident needs to follow proper collection and disposal of animal waste, proper storage of food and prevent pest invasion of food spillage and proper supply of water. The police chief, community development director, code enforcement and building official and other city staff approved this permit. At the public hearing, neighbors spoke in favor of the chickens. The council voted unanimously to grant the permit July 16.

There are some accolades a city can earn for sustainable practices. Robbinsdale was recently awarded a Step 4 from Minnesota GreenStep Cities. Animal Humane Society ends free trap-neuter-release program
The Animal Humane Society will no longer fund free spay/neuter surgeries for feral cats. Animal Humane Society CEO Janelle Dixon said the organization initially had a grant for trap-neuter-release. This ran out, and the organization continued to offer free spay and neuter services for a time. Dog treat library goes up in Robbinsdale
Robbinsdale has a new little free library, but with dog treats instead of books. Jessica Wagner, owner, said it was a way to be “a part of the community and just to give back.” The Yellow Door Dog House sits at 4548 Abbott Ave. N., where Jessica lives and runs Yellow Door Homes Real Estate along with her spouse, Mark Wagner. Although occasional real estate clients will bring their dogs for treats, Jessica said mainly it is her neighbors who’ve been frequenting the spot so far. Jessica’s father-in-law Dan Wagner built and painted the dog treat library. People are welcome to donate dog treats or other accessories as well as take a treat for their dogs.
Robbinsdale ponders Blue Line demands
The city of Robbinsdale is planning to approve or disapprove municipal consent in September. While votes are not yet being tallied, council members have previously hinted where their preferences lie. Some are remembered for action, some for the attitude they carry along the way. E-Man will be remembered by his baseball and football families for both. Emmanuel “E-Man” Seward Jr. passed away on July 9 at the age of 17. He was a member of the Brooklyn Center class of 2025. The Twin Cities wrestling community came together on July 12 for the 2024 Summer Slam, hosted at Edison High School in Minneapolis. On the day of wrestling, Park Center’s Jackson Sanders represented the Northwest Suburban area at the event.
