Vang was the sole filer for the Democratic-Farmer-Laborer Party. She has held the seat since 2018.

House District 38B serves Brooklyn Center and three precincts in southeastern Brooklyn Park.

    House representatives serve two-year terms.

Sun Newspapers reached out to candidates to compile this voter’s guide in advance of the primary election. The following are their responses.

    Chris Chubb

Education: Tech school for Welding, on the job training in the Army

    Current occupation: Welder

I am running for a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives because…

Because I want to fix and support a strong economy in Minnesota. I see financial problems in the future. I want to work to make your dollar go farther in Minnesota

What priorities, skills or experiences would you bring to this seat that you feel is needed by constituents in your district?

If it's a government of the people by the people for the people, it can't just be a government full of lawyers. Laws need to be understood by regular people. I have experience working in the real world and will bring that to legislation.

What is an ongoing, districtwide issue that you feel passionate about? How do you feel it should be prioritized or addressed?

I believe food security is an issue in 38B and across Minnesota. The cost of food and other everyday goods will be unsustainable. I believe it needs to be prioritized by Minnesota law makers. Every time the state sees a surplus, the surplus doesn't make the lives of everyday people better. State surpluses only benefit contractors looking to defraud the state, not residents of Minnesota. Knowing where our tax dollars are going will be a priority of mine at the Minnesota House.

    Robert Marvin

    Education: BSEE / PE

    Current occupation: Principle Electrical Engineer

Community involvement: I am involved in all sorts of things. I volunteer and participate in more than seven things typically a week - meaning I volunteer more often than one time per day on average. And I am helping friends and customers with problems and things all the time. I can't talk about my customers specifically here in Brooklyn Center / Brooklyn Park that I help with personal issues (such as insurance and legal issues) but I'm doing that very frequently as well. I am active in my very local neighborhood as well as a watch captain and the main organizer for our National Night out events etc.

I am running for a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives because…

I care about the people who live in Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park and want to make things better here for everyone. I am good at paying attention to the details and listening and very good at helping everyone come up with good solutions and getting rid of waste/obstacles.

What priorities, skills or experiences would you bring to this seat that you feel is needed by constituents in your district?

I would try to give appropriate consideration to all the issues that came up before me and keep envisioning the people of my district that these would impact. It is very common for politicians to come up with "programs" and "investments" that sound good to people but don't actually accomplish much other than creating more layers of government and giving control of funds to non-governmental groups that are essentially friends to certain politicians. With my media group I've covered MANY of these "town hall" events and tried to participate in these conversations along with local residents actually hoping to benefit from some of these things. My priorities would mostly be around public safety, taxes (Brooklyn Center has the highest city tax rates in the metro), education, property values, and business development and opportunities for better jobs.

What is an ongoing, districtwide issue that you feel passionate about? How do you feel it should be prioritized or addressed?

I have been active working on quite a few. 1. Public safety. 2. Life 3. The costs and burdens of government, and so forth. I try to address these issues as they come up rather than trying to control things. As a new state representative I wouldn't necessarily be able to control orders - but would pay attention to the details and not go along with just bundling 4,000 page documents together and getting them passed. I would want to look at these things individually and make sure they are good for our local residents and efficient and likely to accomplish the goals presented. So I would challenge the bulk of legislation that came before me - because I don't think a lot of it helps Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park. We need to fight for our local people.

Anyway they want. I'm at the Minnesota Capital every Saturday at noon. I answer my phones and email. I try to respond to people who are honest and asking questions but I don't waste time with trolls. I'm happy to help people who are actually wanting to help others and help themselves.
