Breck girls soccer played three games last week, first facing rivals Blake in a loss, before picking up two wins to conclude the regular season with an 11-3-1 overall record.

    Blake

Breck began last week with a 3-1 loss to Blake in the latest iteration of the famed Mustangs-Bears rivalry.

The matchup brought plenty to the table in terms of storylines. The two schools are part of one of the well-known private school rivalries but also have two of the top-ranked girls soccer teams in the state. Breck entered the game ranked third in Class 1A, while undefeated Blake was ranked second in Class 2A.

The night began with sturdy defending by Nora Oberlies, Lottie West, Svea Frantzich, and Jojo Weissman as Blake opened the game with a large portion of the possession. Breck scored the open goal against the run of play through a brilliant header from Bee Kern on a corner kick. Kern rose higher than the rest to laser a header into the back of the net and make it 1-0.

Annie Grossman became a key target up front for Breck as the Mustangs looked for a second goal. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Luna Popescu made several big saves before Blake’s Emily Winkler tied the game up at 1-1 following a great run down the left and a low cross into the box.

Lulu McGarry made multiple big runs for Breck to create a goal, but it stayed 1-1 at halftime as the Mustangs suffered from the issue of players playing passes for runs no one was making.

Breck threatened early in the second half for a goal, with Addy Gunther getting a good shot on goal and Grossman having a busy night bringing the ball down the left wing, but good saves and defense were enough for Blake to survive each.

The Bears instead found two goals, the first headed in by Anna Breyer following a free kick and the second a stunning long range shot by Lauren Breyer, to lead 3-1.

The victory leaves Blake, winners of the 2024 Independent Metro Athletic Conference championship, surpassing Breck 7-0-0 to 5-2-0 in conference play. Breck finished second in the conference.

    Other results

Breck earned a big 5-1 win over Legacy Christian on Oct. 4, featuring goals from Tori Born, Akilah Anderson, and Kern, plus a brace of goals for Weissman. The Mustangs kept the momentum going the next day, beating Providence Academy 1-0 on the road on Oct. 5.

Breck will play in the Section 6A tournament the following week, playing the winner of Cristo Rey at Maranatha on Thursday, Oct. 9.
