Milton’s baseball team gave a game to top-ranked Sun Prairie East on Monday in Sun Prairie.

The Red Hawks led 4-3 through four complete innings thanks to starting pitcher Trey Jones and RBI from Jack Spielmann, Broden Jackson and Charlie Kober.

East manufactured a pair of small-ball runs in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim the lead, however, and Gavin Meece threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to help the Cardinals win 5-4.

Drew Kavanaugh produced the game’s first run for East in the first before Spielmann responded with his RBI single. The Cardinals went back in front in the bottom of the second, then Milton got two runs in the third to go up 3-2.

Jordan Bundy and Jackson walked to start that frame ahead of Kober’s RBI single, then Jackson scored on an error in the Sun Prairie East infield.

Jones put up a zero in the bottom of the third, and the Red Hawks loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. Jackson plated a run on a fielder’s choice hit on the ground to short, but that’s all Milton got out of the inning.

Max Glusick started the decisive bottom of the fifth with an infield single and found himself on third base after a Milton error on a pickoff attempt. Kavanaugh grounded a ball back to Jones that allowed Glusick to score.

John Hadley put the pressure back on Milton with a double, and his courtesy runner, Alex Klun, made it to third on a fielder’s choice that did not produce an out. Manuel Abreu came up next and laid down a bunt that allowed Klun to score the go-ahead run.

Braylen Vande Berg, who had three hits for Milton, and Bundy both reached to start the sixth inning, but Meece avoided any damage with a strikeout and a pair of fly balls. Milton went down in order in the seventh, ending its upset bid.

A game scheduled Tuesday at Oregon was postponed to Wednesday, after this week's press deadline. The Red Hawks are scheduled to host the Panthers at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

The first seven Broncos to come to the plate reached base, and they loaded the bases a second time in the first after Loch's grand slam, which put Union Grove up 5-0.

Another run scored on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, then Dessart smashed a two-run double to center field. Bloxdorf sent a sacrifice fly to right for the first inning's second out and a 9-0 lead for the Broncos.

Result May 3: Milton 5, DeForest 2 — Broden Jackson struck out 10 in 5 2/3 strong innings and Charlie Kober drove in three runs to help the Red Hawks beat the Norskies.

Two of Kober's RBI came when he bunted with runners at second and third in the Red Hawks' three-run fifth inning that turned their 2-1 lead into a 5-1 advantage.

The Norskies got a run back on Cullen Kirchberg's RBI double in the sixth, after which coach Kris Agnew turned to Karson Lueck out of the bullpen. He walked his first batter then struck out the next to end the inning.

Lueck then worked around trouble in the seventh after putting the first two hitters on in that frame. He got an infield fly for the first out, a strikeout for out No. 2 and a flyout to end the game.

Jack Spielmann had two hits, including a double, and scored two runs for the Red Hawks. Braylen Vande Berg also scored twice after a pair of walks, two of six issued by Kirchberg in four innings on the mound for DeForest.
