Bucks for a Buc
Former Eden Prairie High and University of Minnesota football player Antoine Winfield Jr. became the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL when he signed a four-year $84.1 million contract with the New Orleans Buccaneers. $45 million of the contract is guaranteed.
The 2024 season will be Winfield’s fifth with the Buccaneers. Last season he had 122 tackles, including six quarterback sacks. Winfield also picked off three passes from his secondary post.
Pitchers’ duel
More than 500 fans were on hand Saturday, May 11, when Minnetonka hosted the Wayzata High baseball game at Veterans Field.
Part of the reason for the big crowd was Wayzata’s 13-game winning streak to start the 2024 season.
“The game had a playoff feel to it,” Wayzata head coach Bobby DeWitt, whose team left Minnetonka with a 2-1 win. Staff aces Riley Leatherman of Wayzata and Max Nelson of Minnetonka hooked up in a pitchers’ duel.
A run-scoring infield hit by Tyler Gullickson in the top of the seventh gave Wayzata the lead, then Wayzata reliever Noah Filer shut the Skippers out in the bottom of the seventh to preserve Leatherman’s victory.
Kohler chooses Iowa
Minnetonka High girls track and field star Claire Kohler will continue her career for the University of Iowa next season. With Caitlin Clark, the All-American basketball player, finishing up at Iowa this year, Kohler could become the next great female athlete for the Hawkeyes.
“Claire is a great all-around athlete,” Minnetonka head coach Jane Reimer-Morgan said last week.
Indeed, Kohler has not lost a hurdles race in either the 100s or the 300s this season. She was the 2023 state Class AAA champion in both events.
In the Section 7AAA Meet May 8, Kohler finished first in the triple jump with a best of 34 feet, 5.75 inches.
