    Wayzata aquatics team defeats Hopkins 96-80

    Wayzata kept its hopes for a Lake Conference girls aquatics title alive with a 96-80 win over Hopkins Sept. 12 at Hopkins North Junior High.

    The Trojans came out strong and were able to swim exhibition only in the last four events.

    Wayzata placed 1-2-3 in the 200-yard medley relay to open the meet. The wining team of Elise Thompson, Brooke Huldeen, Jaya Larsen and Samantha Nelson swam a time of 2:01.26. Second with a time of 2:02.16 were Stella Christensen, Ella Stark, Gabrielle Tram and Lauren Huldeen. Third place went to Maddy Carr, Paris Peng, Imogen Juntti and Maren Beecher.

    Clara Kozlowicz, the Hopkins ninth-grader won the 200-yard freestyle race in 2:11.68. Brecklyn Nanneman and Kayleigh Klardie of Wayzata placed second and third.

    Sophomore Olivia Murphy of Wayzata finished first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:26.59. Wayzata earned second and third places, as well, with Madeline Ivory and Addy Farrey.

    Wayzata’s success continued with a sweep in the 50 freestyle from Effie Fesenmaier, Ava McNanley and Shay Murphy. Fesenmaier won with a time of 26.50.

    Wayzata diver Ashley Mouyenga was first off the board with 260.15 points. Cassie Kaplan of Hopkins took second with 222.05 and Wayzata’s Abby Freshwater took third with 215.25.

    Back in the racing lanes, Wayzata finished 1-2 in the 100 butterfly with Ella Jones and Emily Alberts in a close race. Jones’ time was 1:04.31 and Alberts swam 1:04.82. Madi Olson of Hopkins took third.

    Wayzata’s Peng won the 100 freestyle in 58.17. Second and third went to Wayzata teammates Thompson and Lauren Huldeen.

    Wayzata swept the 500 freestyle with Evie Holmes, Brooke Huldeen and Liya Dai. Holmes had a winning time of 5:26.80.

    Hopkins won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:58.42 with Nyla West, Sadie Steckler, Nora Valkevich and Madelyn Walvoord. Wayzata had fast exhibition swims from two relays. Nelson, Jones, Klardie and Lauren Huldeen swam 1:50.90. Maddie Rangel, Peng, Siri Feldmann and Larsen finished in 1:50.97.

    Madi Olson, Steckler and West finished 1-2-3 for Hopkins in the 100 backstroke with Olson swimming 1:08.20. Tram swam 1:06.34 in an exhibition lane for Wayzata.

    Kozlowicz, Emma Lundequam and Anna Jaeger of Hopkins finished 1-2-3 in the 100 breaststroke. Kozlowicz swam 1:20.24 for first. Ella Stark of Wayzata swam an exhibition time of 1:13.90.

    Hopkins closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay from Madi Olson, Josie Low, Kozlowicz and Lundequam. Wayzata had the fastest times in the exhibition lanes. Tram, Ava McNanley, Lucy Troyak and Shay Murphy swam 3:54.94. Trojan teammates Olivia Murphy, Fesenmaier, Alberts and Carr were close behind in 3:55.55. Evie Marks, Brynn McNanley, Jones and Sabrina Shreshtha finished under 4 minutes with their time of 3:57.98.
