Providence Academy’s football team has a zoo-like matchup for homecoming at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27.

The Lions (3-1) take on the Tigers from Delano (0-4) on Providence’s home field in Plymouth.

“Delano might be the best 0-4 team I have seen in 17 years,” Providence head coach Colin Rooney said. “It is a potential trap game for us with Orono coming up the following week.”

The Lions traveled to Mound Westonka and spoiled the White Hawks’ homecoming 14-3 Sept. 20.

“We had two costly turnovers in the red zone,” coach Rooney said. “If we had executed a little bit better, we might have won 28-3.”

On the other hand, the Lions’ defense did a great job. They stopped Mound Westonka on a first-and-goal opportunity from the 4 yard line and had a key interception from Colin Gregory late in the fourth quarter.

Gregory was the leading tackler and raised havoc along with defensive teammates Abu Tarawallie, Joe Berghult and Grant Sandell.

“Because we have Abu in the line, teams can’t run up the middle against us,” coach Rooney said. “With our linebackers, we’re an aggressive, blitzing team.”

Quarterback Magnus Hansen threw a touchdown pass Friday night, hitting Matthew Hunter from 5 yards out. Sandell scored the other Providence touchdown on a 3-yard run.

“Matthew Hunter played right tackle for us as a sophomore and junior,” Rooney noted. “He is doing a good job as a receiver this year. At 6-4, he gets a lot of 50-50 balls.”

Homecoming always has some distractions, but the Lions will also have big fan support this week.

“Delano is much better than its record shows,” Rooney said. “We have to continue playing well.”
