The first match of the Section 6AA Tournament didn’t offer much of a challenge for the Wayzata High girls soccer team Oct. 9.

Playing on their home turf at Wayzata High Stadium, the Trojans had a 5-0 lead 20 minutes into their match against Bloomington Kennedy. At that point, Wayzata head coach Tony Peszneker switched the dial and asked his team to increase the passing.

“We put some restraint on the girls,” Peszneker said. “It is important to show respect for your opponents. One of the parents from Bloomington gave us a nice compliment after the game.”

The final score was 12-0 as every field player on the Wayzata roster played at least half of the game. As has often been the case this season, the scoring was spread around. Meanwhile, the defense earned its fourth straight shutout, which was the sixth in the last seven matches.

Sophomore forward Lauren Craig had a solid performance with five points on one goal and four assists while teammates Sophie Hawkinson, Addie Milo, Tenley Senden and Alex Vellieux each scored two goals.

Sarah Hyde, Julia Maroon and Ella O’Keefe chipped in with one goal and one assist each.

Coach Peszneker got all three of his varsity goalies involved. Sophia Alvarez and Fiona Kinahan each played 25 minutes and Quinn Olson was on the field for 30 minutes.

Wayzata’s back line of center backs Abby Beal and Ava Nayar and outside backs Carolyn Voss and Elaina Grabowski limited penetration by Kennedy’s forwards. Voss had one assist to help the offense.

Speaking of Voss’ versatility, coach Peszneker said, “Carolyn leads our defenders in scoring with three goals and five assists. She is a very good player as a ninth-grader and attended the U.S. Youth National Camp for Under-14s.”

As this edition went to press Oct. 15, Wayzata was playing Rogers in the section semifinals. If Wayzata won, it would set up a match against either Minneapolis Southwest or Minneapolis Washburn at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Wayzata High Stadium.

Wayzata’s overall record going into the section semifinals was 14-1-1.
