Eagan opens 4-point lead in boys standings

As many as six teams have a realistic chance to win the South Suburban Conference girls soccer championship with one week remaining in the regular season.

Eastview, Lakeville North and Lakeville South all won Tuesday and are tied for first place in the league at 4-1-1 (13 points). Rosemount (4-2) had been in first place before losing to Eastview 3-2 on Tuesday. Eagan and Prior Lake, both 3-1-1, are tied for fifth in the conference but each has played one fewer SSC game than the co-leaders.

The final round of conference games is scheduled Wednesday, Oct. 2. Several potentially decisive games remain, including Eastview at Lakeville South (7 p.m. Thursday), Prior Lake at Eagan (11 a.m. Saturday), Rosemount at Lakeville North (5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30) and Lakeville North at Lakeville South (7 p.m. Oct. 2).

Section tournaments are scheduled to begin Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Lakeville North defeated Apple Valley 5-0 and Lakeville South topped Farmington 3-0 to grab their shares of first place in the South Suburban. Lakeville North (8-1-3 overall) is ranked 10th in Class 3A. The Panthers’ only loss this season was 3-0 to Prior Lake on Sept. 9.

Lakeville South’s only conference loss is 4-3 to Rosemount on Sept. 5. Lakeville North dealt Eastview its only SSC loss, 1-0 on Sept. 19.

Eagan defeated Burnsville 12-0 on Tuesday to stay within range of the leaders.

    Boys soccer

The South Suburban boys soccer standings aren’t quite as muddled as the girls as Eagan has opened a four-point lead. Eagan defeated Burnsville 9-0 on Tuesday, improving to 5-1 (15 points) in the SSC with three conference games remaining. Rosemount (11 points), Prior Lake (10), Apple Valley (nine) and Lakeville North (nine) make up the rest of the top half of the league standings.

Darius Knox scored three goals and Zayan Oliyath and Miklo Jones two each in Eagan’s victory over Burnsville.

Rosemount remained in second place after defeating Eastview 2-0 on Tuesday on goals by Carter Watt and Garrett Garms. The defending conference champion Irish (3-1-2 in the league) would have a better shot to make up ground if they had a game remaining against Eagan, but the Wildcats won their meeting 3-1 on Sept. 9.

Eagan plays at Farmington at 5 p.m. Thursday, looking to further strengthen its hold on first place. The Tigers are 1-7-5 overall and 0-2-4 in the conference.

    Streak’s over

Burnsville’s 2-1 victory over Fridley on Sept. 21 might not have affected the South Suburban Conference standings because Fridley isn’t a member of the league, but it did a lot for the Blaze. It was Burnsville’s first varsity soccer victory since Sept. 14, 2021, a span of 47 games.

Earlier this season the Blaze ended a 38-game losing streak with by tying Bloomington Kennedy 2-2. The Blaze also tied Lakeville South 1-1 on Sept. 11. But the Fridley game was Burnsville’s first varsity boys soccer victory since defeating Farmington 4-2 in mid-September of 2021.
