Student Profile: Shay Hamel ’26 Following Family Footsteps at Westfield State
Shay Hamel ‘26, a junior at Westfield State University, is majoring in elementary education with a minor in Spanish. Her passion for Spanish began in middle school and continued through high school, leading her to pursue the language at the collegiate level. Hamel is a third-generation Westfield State student, following in the footsteps of her grandfather and mother, who were also elementary education majors. Because of the University’s well-known reputation for offering high-quality education at an affordable rate, Hamel said that the choice to pursue elementary education here was easy.
Valley Blue Sox fall to Mystic Schooners after late rally
The Valley Blue Sox lost on the road to the Mystic Schooners, 8-3 on Tuesday. Jonathan Hogart collected three hits including two doubles for the Blue Sox and drove in a run, while Connor Misch added a solo home run, his second home run of the season. Andre Vidal also drove in a run with a double.

WESTFIELD — Whip City Fiber is on track to reach every Westfield neighborhood next year or sooner. Westfield Gas & Electric officials gave an update on their broadband internet service Tuesday as they hosted two open houses to answer customers’ questions on scheduling, installation, streaming, speed, and small business offerings.

VIDEO: Damage from Monday’s storms in Franklin County
DEERFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - The storms that rolled through Tuesday night left damage behind, including downed trees and power outages in Franklin County. It has been a long nearly 24 hours for electrical crews in Greenfield as they had been looking to fix multiple issues. Approximately one or two minutes away from the area of Monson Street and Wisdom Way in Greenfield, multiple utility trucks could be seen addressing a downed tree that knocked out electrical wires. Kristin and Corriann Delaney, a mother and daughter who live just down the road from the tree fell, told Western Mass News that they have not had electricity and running water since around 9 p.m. Tuesday night. They did, however, have a small generator, which helped them and their dog get through the night.
Update: 3 Massachusetts counties under a tornado warning Tuesday evening
On Tuesday at 8:11 p.m. an updated tornado warning was issued by the National Weather Service in effect until 8:30 p.m. for Franklin, Hampshire and Worcester counties. "At 8:10 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over New Salem, or 10 miles south of Orange, moving east at 55 mph," states the weather service. "Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely."

Update: Rip current statement affecting Barnstable County until Wednesday evening
An updated rip current statement was issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday at 3:39 p.m. in effect until 8 p.m. for Barnstable County. "Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water," explains the weather service. "Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help."
