Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. originally aired on ABC for seven seasons between 2013 and 2020. Throughout the years, there has been considerable speculation about where the show fits in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recently, a Marvel executive addressed the issue, offering what appears to be a definitive answer about the show’s place in the MCU canon.

Marvel Studios’ Brad Winderbaum addresses if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is MCU canon

Brad Winderbaum, Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation at Marvel Studios, called Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a “great show” in a recent interview and offered his views on its place in the MCU. According to him, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. incredibly fits into The Multiverse Saga.

“I think that Agents of SHIELD is a really great show and there was a long time where some of the best reveals in that show were during the Winter Soldier era where Hydra emerges and you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh!'” Winderbaum told Screen Rant . “I remember that feeling, even knowing what was happening, just being a fan, [going] ‘It really is connected!'” he added.

Winderbaum further stated, “I think that there is, in a crazy way, like you said, it does feel like it fits into The Multiverse Saga in an incredible way.” He went on to state that he loved Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “I want to go down this road with you, you know I do, but we’re just gonna take a deep breath for a second. Just know that I love that cast, I love Clark Gregg [who portrays Phil Coulson] and I love that show,” he said.

When Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. came out, it was a direct continuation of some of the plot threads from The Avengers (2012). In the following years, story elements popped up connecting Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to various mainstream MCU entries like Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Despite this, Marvel Studios’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe An Official Timeline, an official book detailing the MCU timeline, reportedly doesn’t mention Coulson’s resurrection, effectively hinting that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t part of the main MCU. And now, with Winderbaum’s statement, this debate seems to have ended for good.
