Marvel Issues Statement About X-Men ’97 Creator’s Firing Following Comments From Beau DeMayo

Marvel has issued a statement regarding X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo ’s firing.

In March 2024, DeMayo was fired as head writer of X-Men ’97 after completing work on the first two seasons of the Disney+ series. Marvel did not give a reason for DeMayo’s firing at the time.

While DeMayo has remained mostly quiet about his firing up until now, he discussed the matter in an X post on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

He wrote, “Firstly, I’m so grateful to have worked on #XMen97, collaborating with some amazingly talented folks. Creating this revival was a dream come true and the support fans have shown is so touching. However, I felt it pressing for me to speak up in the wake of leaving the show…Above is #XMen fan-art I posted on Instagram for Gay Pride in June. On June 13, #Marvel sent a letter notifiying me that they’d stripped my Season 2 credits due to the post. sadly, this is the latest in a troubling pattern I suffered through while working on #XMen97 and #Blade.”

In addition to X-Men ’97, DeMayo spent a number of years working on the script for the forthcoming Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali.

DeMayo concluded, “I’ll have more to say soon but must take a step back from social media to find a safer space for me to be out, proud, and nerdy. Stay tuned.”

What did Marvel say about Beau DeMayo’s firing?

Marvel responded to DeMayo’s comments by releasing a statement to The Hollywood Reporter . It reads, “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately, and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s article also notes, “Sources say that following his exit, an agreement was reached between the two parties over the issue of tweeting about the show, something that DeMayo had continued to occasionally do. In light of the breeches, his credit for season two was removed. While no details of the cause of the termination or the internal reviews have surfaced, sources say it involved sexual misconduct.”

After Marvel’s comment was released, DeMayo then posted on X, “The truth will be revealed. After their Disney Plus disaster, Marvel wants to mislead with alleged contract breaches over tweets. It’s tragic it’s come to this but unsurprising. Stay tuned.”

Retweeting his original post, DeMayo also wrote, “This is their Disney-Marvel’s usual playbook. Legal letters as well as other items to prove their long-standing pattern to follow. It’s about finding a safe outlet. Thanks for your faith and patience.”
