Marvel’s Blade Cancellation Rumors Addressed in New Update

Rumors have been circulating about the potential cancellation of the upcoming Blade movie featuring Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali. But, a recent update suggests that the project is still very much in the works at Marvel. Conversations about the movie have been around since 2013, but it has undergone multiple director and screenwriter changes over the years and now seems to be caught in a development limbo. Further, after Wesley Snipes reprised his role from the New Line Cinema movies in Deadpool & Wolverine, there have been calls for an MCU solo Blade film with Snipes, including from Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds.

Blade gets brief official update from Marvel’s TV Head

Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ streaming, television, and animation head, indicated that the Blade movie is still alive at Marvel in a recent interview. He was speaking about Marvel’s overall approach to horror and mentioned Blade as one of the upcoming projects in the genre.

Aside from Blade, Agatha All Along, which debuts on Disney Plus on September 18, 2024, and continues the story of the witch Agatha Harkness, will have plenty of horror elements, as will Marvel Zombies, an animated Disney Plus miniseries. However, each of their horror elements will be distinct from one another, as per Brad Winderbaum.

“I think that it goes back to the filmmaker’s intent,” Winderbaum told Entertainment Weekly . “The horror on screen in Agatha is going to be different than the horror on screen in Marvel Zombies, is going to be different than the horror on screen in Blade. It was different than the horror on screen in Moon Knight,” he added.

“It really depends on the vision of the filmmaker on what horror cues you’re pulling from. And that’s not just unique to horror. It’s unique to any genre we’re playing with. Obviously, there’s many different ways to tell a story,” Winderbaum concluded.

Blade is still slated to release on November 7, 2025. But at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel boss Kevin Feige spoke about three movies the studio was releasing in 2025. He mentioned Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps but spoke nothing about Blade, leaving fans to wonder about a delay. However, with what Winderbaum said, the fans can rest assured that Marvel still intends to make the Blade movie.

Now, whether the movie retains its 2025 release date or gets pushed to 2026 remains to be seen.
