Jai Courtney made his debut as Captain Boomerang in 2016’s Suicide Squad and returned for a small cameo in 2021’s The Suicide Squad . While his portrayal of the Aussie villain was appreciated by many fans, his run as the character didn’t continue beyond his second outing as the character was killed off. But, when asked recently, Courtney admitted that he’d be open to return. However, he doesn’t think it will happen.

Jai Courtney talks possibilities of Captain Boomerang’s return in DC Studios

2024 will begin to more fully establish James Gunn’s DC Universe with the Creature Commandos animated series. Beyond that, 2025’s DC projects will continue to expand the Universe even further, and Jai Courtney recently revealed whether he’d be a part of that as George “Digger” Harkness.

While promoting his new movie, Catching Dust, ComicBook.com asked Courtney whether his Captain Boomerang could be back. He replied:

“At this point, no. I mean I’ve always kind of been candid about that. Boomerang was so much fun to play. I would love to see him come back in some capacity. It’s impossible to imagine, right now, that that’s on the DC hit list. But who knows?”

He continued by saying that he always wished for a Captain Boomerang origin project:

“I mean, I’ve always had a dream of finding a way to do an origin story with him, I know he’s not like the most beloved character from that canon, but he was so much fun to play and I just think doing something in that space with such irreverence, and just that jovial sort of sensibility would just be a hoot.”

Lastly, he said that he would return if he got a call for it:

“So listen, I’m open to it if the opportunity ever came and the phone rang and they wanted me to resurrect that part.”

James Gunn’s DC Studios is set to introduce new characters with Superman. However, some old DCEU characters are planned to make the jump to the new universe. This will be in Peacemaker Season 2, Creature Commandos, and the Amanda Waller series. Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang does have connections to the DCEU characters from those shows. But considering that Harkness died, it would make his return highly unlikely. It’s possible that the character could return in a prequel story or as a multiversal variant.
