Josh Brolin won’t be playing Hal Jordan in the DCU .

Brolin, who is known for playing Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was being eyed to play Hal Jordan in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. More specifically, Brolin had the opportunity to star in Lanterns , the forthcoming Green Lantern television series that will feature both Hal and John Stewart.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , Brolin received an official offer to star in Lanterns near the end of August; however, he has decided to pass on it.

No further details are available at this time.

Who else could play Hal Jordan in Lanterns and the DCU?

It’s not yet clear who will be playing Hal in the DCU; although, online rumors suggest that Matthew McConaughey or Ewan McGregor could be looked at next now that Brolin has passed.

So far, the only Green Lantern character whose DCU casting has been publicly announced is Nathan Fillion, who is playing Guy Gardner and will debut in 2025’s Superman.

In June 2024, HBO announced that the Lanterns DCU series has been ordered for eight episodes. True Detective: Night Country’s Chris Mundy is serving as the showrunner and an executive producer. Mundy is also co-writing the series with Tom King and Damon Lindelöf.

“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” the synopsis reads.

”We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm,” Gunn and Safran previously said in a statement . “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”

A release date for Lanterns has not yet been set. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is looking to begin production in Atlanta in January 2025.
