No one grovels better than Pete Devries; he’s in the water every day, as long as he can help it.

This spring I got my first taste of surfing in British Colombia , and I haven't been able to get it off my mind since. The people, the place, the waves, the water, the Canadian surfing experience is something special. It cuts down to the core of why we all started chasing waves in the first place. Adventures into the unknown, abundant wildlife, and the opportunity to create some deep, core memories.

A few weeks ago Canadian photo ace Marcus Paladino reached out to SURFER and shared that he was holding some nice shots from the last couple months. Indulging my newfound love for I asked him to send the photos along and we'd take look. His trove of A-plus images didn't disappoint. In fact, it did quite the opposite. It inspired.

As I'm based in San Clemente , California, summertime in Southern California can be a bit of a drag. Traffic, crowds, tourists, clogged lineups. And to be honest, the surf this summer has been relatively lackluster. So, when a raft of shots from somewhere as wild and beautiful as Canada's western flank, it makes me want to fall off the grid and so search for some sanctuary.

Ultimately, that's the power of a good surf photo. It's not only pleasing to the eye, but it moves you, inspires you to get on the open road and get lost. Yeah, the water's cold in Canada, but it sure beats groveling with 30 grommets at T Street. Thanks for the shots, Marcus.

August is mostly foggy at the beach, hence the locals’ term “Fogust.” It keeps other surfers at bay while Pete Devries puts on a show for whoever’s in the water.

Michael Darling works a full-time day job now and only has weekends to surf. He makes good use of his time off, sneaking into a cheeky barrel at a spot he calls “El Desperado.”

Reed Platenius has been traveling a lot for the QS lately but loves to stay sharp on point while at home.

When Hanna Scott was younger, she said she wanted to be Dennis Rodman when she grew up. So the shaved head and pink hair seem pretty fitting as she cross-steps for a layup on her log.

Pete Devries hates crowds, so surfing in town during summer, with all the surf schools around Tofino, can get tiresome. He prefers to venture off the beaten path for some much-needed solitude.

Fun but fickle—this was the only proper ramp Pete Devries got during a short-lived session at this novelty wave.

As a goofy foot, Reed Platenius opts to go left whenever he gets the chance in the so-called “land of rights.”
