A Rising Chilean Star Pulls into Punta de Lobos Barrel

You may not have heard the name Dominique Charrier much before, but this 2024 SURFER Big Wave Challenge likely won’t be the last time. Charrier is a 21-year-old up-and-coming big-wave surfer raised at one of Chile's best waves. She grew up playing on the rocks in front of Punta de Lobos, the famous point that funnels roping lefthanders into the coastline. Charrier has made a name for herself with some standout waves during the 2023-24 Red Bull Magnitude in Hawaii. But she got her first tube in gun-worthy surf this past winter at her home break.

Riding a 9’8” gun shaped by her father Marcel Charrier, who runs Cipress Surfboards , she pulled into one of the bigger waves of the day. Charrier didn’t make it out, but she got a taste and she’s hungry for more.

“​​This wave was special for me since this year the season was very stormy and slow in swells and my goal this winter was to enter my first tube with my gun,” Charrier reflected. “That day it was slow but the sandbar behind Los Morros was very good, it was a series of two waves and I caught the second one, which was the biggest of the day. I am very happy that my family has given me the opportunity. It’s definitely the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen and I can’t wait to try it again!! I really like paddling big waves.”
