Watch: World Champ Caity Simmers Rips a Cigarette Surfboard

Before she was a world champion. Before she declared that " Pipeline's for the f---ing girls ." When she was still just a young, impressionable teenager (she's now a young, inspirational teenager), Caity Simmers was already an agent of change.

Three years ago this week, a then 15-year-old Simmers and her brother took a test spin on surfboards made out of cigarette butts. Conceived by industrial designer Taylor Lane and filmmaker Ben Judkins, the first cigarette board was built back in 2017 for Vissla's annual Creators and Innovators Upcycle Contest . A few years down the track, Lane and Judkins had a new fish under Simmers feet and a mid-length for her brother.

“I’ve never seen anyone look so immediately natural on a Ciggy Board," marvels Lane in a newly released video from Simmers' 2021 session. "Her transition period onto a Ciggy Board was pretty much nonexistent. I was blown away by her skill and her style, all while riding a board quite a bit bigger / heavier than she was used to."

The model Simmers is on is the Seaside shaped by Rob Machado, which was designed to be ridden by someone close to Machado's size, making her performance that much more inspiring. Meanwhile, her brother, Timo, is slaying it on a Marc Andreini Ciggy Mid-Length.
