    Cavaliers split doubleheader against Hornets

    2024-05-08

MARINETTE — The Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy boys baseball team hosted Gillett/Suring for a Marinette and Oconto Conference doubleheader on Monday, with the two teams splitting the series 1-1.

Jake Farley and Teagan Anderson combined to toss a no-hitter in game one, as the Cavaliers fended off the Hornets 4-2.

Gillett/Suring (2-7 M&O, 3-12 overall) earned the split thanks to some seventh-inning magic in game two, with the Hornets claiming a 9-8 decision over the Cavaliers.

Hunter Brief scored to give STAA a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one before Daktoa Yother drove in a run to make it a 2-0 game in the bottom of the second.

Anderson blasted a two-run home run to put the Cavaliers ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Hornets made matters interesting in the top of the sixth after Ryan Pensis and Sam Schindler both crossed home plate to pull Gillett/Suring within two.

Anderson did the rest on the mound, retiring the side in order to wrap up the no-hitter and the victory for STAA.

Anderson pitched five innings for the Cavaliers and racked up nine strikeouts against just two walks. Farley covered the final two frames and punched out three while issuing one free pass.

Anderson helped himself with the bat, going 2-for-3 with a homer and two driven in. Farley added two stolen bases, while Calvin Peters went 1-3 with a double and a run scored.

The nightcap saw each team plate four runs in the second inning before the Hornets seized a three-run lead in the bottom of the third.

Yother scored in the top of the third to make it a two-run contest before Brief and Anderson both dashed past home plate to tie the game at 7-7 in the top of the sixth.

STAA grabbed its first lead of the game in top of the sixth after Yother scored on an RBI from Farley, but Gillett/Suring responded with a walk-off, two-run single from Pensis to end the game.

Yother tossed four-and-one-third innings in game two and gave up 10 hits, five runs (all earned) and one walk while collecting three strikeouts.

Dominic Tanguay pitched two innings and was tagged for four hits, four earned runs and two walks.

Ethan King walked twice and added a pair of RBIs for the Cavaliers. Peters went 2-4 with a double and a ribbie, while Yother was 1-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
