    Surry Arts has full slate of summer camps

    Area children and youth have the chance to explore the arts this summer at the Surry Arts Council. Registration is open for their summer arts camps, but spaces are limited.

    There are several camps available throughout the summer each focusing on different arts disciplines including acting, crafts, dance, music, theatre and visual arts.

    Arts Alive will be held June 3-6 for ages 3-5, and June 10-13 ages 6-11. Classes will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Andy Griffith Playhouse. The theme is “Pirates and Mermaids.” Campers will learn the names of their bones, information about seashells, and enjoy music, dance, and crafts. Arts Alive leaders include Tyler Matanick, Bruce Burgess, and Madeline Matanick. The Arts Alive parade and celebration for all participants and their families will be held on June 13. The cost of the camp is $50.

    Mixed Media Art Camp will be held June 17-20 for ages 5-9, June 24-27 for ages 10-14, and July 8-11 for ages 15-18. Camp will be held daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Surry Arts Council Art Studio. Participants will make multiple projects using different forms of art including clay, fiber art (weaving), jewelry making, paper mâché, tie-dye, and more. All participants will need to bring a packed lunch each day. The instructor is Amanda Easter. She received her BFA from ASU with an emphasis in ceramics. The cost of the camp is $225.

    Musical Theatre Boot Camp will be on June 17-21, for ages 9-18, from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Andy Griffith Playhouse. Tyler Matanick will lead the camp. Participants will learn about auditions, choreography, dance, tech, and more. Registration is $100.

    Princess Camp is June 17-21 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for ages 4 and older in the Surry Arts Council Dance Studio. Princesses will learn manners and enjoy crafts, music, and dancing. The Princess Coronation for all participants and their families is on Friday, June 21. Madeline Matanick is the instructor. The registration fee is $100.

    Visual Arts Camps will run June 22-26 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for ages 4-8, and 1:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 9-16. The instructor is Surry County Schools art teacher Brenda Hernandez. On July 15-19 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for ages 4-8, and 1:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 9-16, Kayla Ellis will lead a second session of Visual Arts Camps in the Surry Arts Council Art Studio. In the June session, participants will explore different art styles and complete a project each day. In the July session, participants will celebrate art from south of the border. They will make a 3-D paper cactus, sew a Peruvian serape, learn about Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and more. Registration is $100 per session.

    Youth Acting Camp will run June 24-28 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with lunch provided for ages 6-18, and again from July 8-12 and July 15-19, 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. for ages 8-18. Classes will be held in the Andy Griffith Playhouse. Tyler Matanick will lead the sessions along with Robert Parks and Salem Poindexter. Participants will learn blocking, memorization, and characterization. Each session will culminate with a performance on June 28 and July 19 respectively. Registration is $120 for the June session and $150 for the July session.

    Dance Camp will be held from July 15-19 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for ages 4-6 and from 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m. for ages 7-12. and meets in the Surry Arts Council Dance Studio. Registration is $100. Madeline Matanick will instruct the dance camp. Campers will learn new dances and dance steps. There will be a showcase for families during the final class.

    Surry Strings Camp runs July 15-19 for ages 6 and older from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Historic Earle Theatre. The camp is open to all skill levels from beginner to intermediate. Instruments are provided if needed during the camp sessions and participants are given an introduction to the basics of playing fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and banjo as well as information on Surry County’s distinctive style of old-time music. Registration is $100. Surry Strings Camp is supported in part by a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. Award winning instructor Jim Vipperman will lead the camp.

    Scholarships are available to Surry County residents for selected summer camp programs from the office of John L. Gravitte, DDS, PA and from the Kester Sink Endowment.
