    Arts council awards nearly $3k in scholarships

    The Surry Arts Council recently awarded more than $2,700 in scholarships to Surry County students who are pursuing a college degree in the arts.

    The scholarship committee which made the awards consisted of Henry Rowe, Kathy Pruett, Jennie Lowry, Sylvia Lowry, and Adam Rudisill. Marianna Juliana, contract and grant administrator for the Surry Arts Council, coordinated the process. Applications were received in dance/movement, design, drama, instrumental music, tv/film/communications, visual/fine art, and voice.

    Raegan Amos, voice, is the recipient of the Jimmy Lowry scholarship. Raegan is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Education with a concentration in Musical Theatre.

    LillyRuth Beck, drama, is a Sandy Beam scholarship recipient. She is a sophomore at Lees-McRae College pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre. Estella Heid, dance/movement, is also a Sandy Beam scholarship recipient. She is a senior at Penn Foster High School. She plans to attend community college and then transfer to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and Graphic Design.

    Nicholas Calvillo-Solis, instrumental music, is the recipient of the Mildred Wolfe Robertson scholarship. He is a senior at Mount Airy High School. He plans to attend Lenoir-Rhyne University to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

    Aysha Easter, visual/fine art, is the recipient of the Betty Lynn scholarship. She is a senior at Mount Airy High School. She plans to attend Surry Community College to obtain an Associates of Fine Arts.

    These endowments are set up by friends and family in honor of loved ones. The scholarship endowment funds were set up and are managed by the North Carolina Community Foundation and the Winston-Salem Foundation.     Additional scholarships are available for Surry Arts Council summer camps. These are made possible through the Kester Sink Birthday Endowment and the John L.
