Navy Looking to Add Housing for 8,000 Sailors in Hampton Roads
NORFOLK — The Hampton Roads area could soon see new Navy housing that would provide beds for about 8,000 sailors, area officials announced Monday. A bipartisan group of state and local elected officials participated in a roundtable discussion with U.S. Navy personnel on federal, state and local investments in the Hampton Roads region. The goal was to bring all levels of government together to ensure a unified approach, including timelines, on revitalizing downtown Newport News around the shipyard.

Fuel tanker catches fire in Virginia Beach
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — No one was hurt after a fuel tanker caught fire and leaked fuel in Virginia Beach on Monday. The Virginia Beach Fire Department said it happened in the 3500 block of Cellar Door Way, near Dam Neck Road. A fuel tanker truck caught fire, and its fuel tank ruptured in the process. Hazmat crews were able to stop the leak, and the remaining diesel and gasoline were safely transferred to other trucks that were standing by.

Two Washington Scholars and four Alvey Scholars will be among the thousand incoming Eagles at the University of Mary Washington in fall 2024. The students earned full-ride scholarships, which are renewable for four years of undergraduate studies with GPA and residential requirements. Alexandria man seeks answers after his dog dies while boarding at PetSmart
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (7News) — An Alexandria man is seeking answers after his beloved 3-year-old dog died while boarding at a PetSmart in the Potomac Yard shopping center. Andrew Noles said before going on a trip to New York last Thursday, he dropped off Clark, an Aussiedoodle, at the “Petshotel” inside the PetSmart store. Noles said Clark had stayed at the facility in the past without any problems.
Oak Island denies permit extension for house
Oak Island Town Council denied a request to extend a special use permit (SUP) this month for a property owner who said he wanted to build his retirement home at The Point. Council held a quasi-judicial hearing during its June 18 meeting to consider the extension for Kuntal Ghandi and his property at 6963 Kings Lynn Drive. Ghandi appeared before council for a quasi-judicial hearing earlier this year related to his Ocean Crest Motel property on East Beach Drive. He didn’t get the same results this time around, however, as council felt Ghandi failed to meet the requirements needed to grant an extension and denied the request in a 4-1 vote with Mark Martin casting the lone dissenting opinion.
