GEORGETOWN — Fundraising efforts in the fight against cancer will sail to a pirate theme at the 2024 Relay for Life of Sussex County.

Titled “Pirates of the Cure-ibbean,” the event will be held Sept. 7 at Sandhill Fields in Georgetown.

The relay will run from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring music, contests, crafts, food trucks, bounce houses, a car show, pirate costume contest and other activities.

Organizers invite the public to form a fundraising team, buy a luminaria, register for the survivor reception, donate and celebrate life with family and friends.

Harrington resident Kathy Blanchette is the chairwoman of the Relay for Life of Sussex County. She manned a bake sale fundraiser at the July 3 Georgetown concert featuring Sticky Situation at Sandhill Fields.

“We work hard to raise money for the American Cancer Society,” said Ms. Blanchette. “I’m sure that most everyone here has been affected by cancer in some way, whether it is yourself personally, a close family member or a dear friend. We work to raise money so that someday there is no more cancer.”

Ms. Blanchette noted there is no Relay for Life in Kent County. It is the largest nonprofit fundraiser for the American Cancer Society

Funds raised through Relay for Life go toward research for all cancers, lodging for cancer patients and their caregiver in larger cities and rides to appointments, Ms. Blanchette said.

Festivities on Sept. 7 begin with the survivor reception at 4 p.m. with opening ceremonies at 5.

Beebe Healthcare is the presenting sponsor of Relay for Life of Sussex County.
