Multiple mid-July Mat-Su fishery changes
Since writing last week’s column I’ve heard of sockeye salmon being caught at Fish Creek out Knik Goose Bay Road. 54 sockeye were recorded passing the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Fish Creek Weir through Monday July 8. Sport sockeye catches will likely increase as more fish migrate upstream through Sunday June 14. The Fish Creek salmon sport fishery will then close on July 15. From July 15 - 31 the Fish Creek dip net fishery MAY open, by emergency order, if ADF&G determines adequate escapement through the weir will likely occur.. Note: within the past decade I believe the earliest the Fish Creek personal use dip net fishery has ever opened has been July 19.

Concerns about first responders
First responders - law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) – are often heralded as heroes who rush to our aid in times of crisis. However, there may be instances when we feel the need to voice a complaint about their conduct or actions. While it's important to recognize that these professionals work in high-stress, complex environments, you also need to know how to address concerns when they arise.

No Palmer Garden and Art Fair
The second weekend in July has always been a big weekend in Palmer celebrating the traditional Garden and Art Faire in the green grassy space between the borough building, the Palmer Ale House, The Museum, The Colony Inn and the Library. This was an unforgettable summer festival with all the great things and none of the bad things. Artists, musicians, gardeners, craftspeople, specialty foods, and quilt-makers would have many white tents and festive spaces. And because it was in “the town green” it was especially lovely. It is with great disappointment that there will NOT be a Garden and Art Fair this weekend. There has been plenty of emotion and discussions over it’s demise so we won’t go over this again. Nonetheless it is a very sad and poignant loss for our community. Thankfully, the Palmer Museum is promising to try a smaller version of “Art in the Garden,”on July 27th, so stay tuned.
