Cavender elected as president of Kanawha County Board of Education
KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — Kanawha County Board of Education member Ric Cavender was elected Monday to be the board’s new president. The vote came during the board’s meeting Monday after Cavender, Kate White and Jim Crawford all took their oaths for their new terms, according to the school board.
New Morgantown leadership sworn-in, homeless issues continue
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. Morgantown city council members elected leadership for the coming year and called for action on homeless issues and support for the police department. First Ward Councilor Joe Abu-Ghannam was elected mayor after dual nominations. Abu-Ghannam, Jenny Selin, Dave Harshbarger, and Bill Kawecki voted for Joe Abu-Ghannam. Fifth Ward Councilor Danielle Trumble received votes from herself and Third Ward Councilor Louise Michael. Seventh Ward Councilor Brian Butcher abstained in the vote for mayor.

The Bridgeport Alumni Association marked nearly a century and a half of tradition and success with the 140th annual banquet June 29. The class of 1974 celebrated their 50th anniversary and the bulldog spirit they took with them through life. The banquet was in Undo’s West at St. Clairsville.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va (WDTV) - The city of Buckhannon will host its Fourth of July events on Friday, and officials say the public is sure to have a blast. “Well, they want to be down in Jawbone Park at 5 PM, We are going to have our famous chicken dinners, with Create Buckhannon. A lot of vendors, a lot of food available, the snow street band is going to be performing, and then at sundown, at dark, we will have an extravaganza of fireworks,” said Randy Sanders, City Recorder & Information Coordinator.
Morgantown Public Library celebrates 60th Anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) -As Independence Day approaches, it gives us a time reflect on some of the important moments in our countries history that has helped contributed to making the U.S what it is today. One of those crucial moments was signing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The bill, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, put an end to segregation; and gave Americans the equal opportunity to enjoy public accommodations without being descriminated against based on race, gender, or national origin. Today marks the 60th anniversary of the milestone that changed this country forever, and to honor that the Morgantown Public Library is hosting a celebration this evening. The night will feature local civil rights activists like ‚Al Anderson, who attended the 1963 March on Washington. Charlene Marshall, who helped integrate local restaurants. Not to mention an exhibit that tells the story of the historical act; designed by the community coalition for social justice. Eve Faulkes, the main designer of the exhibit not only wanted to tell the story of the civil rights movement as a national movement, but also a local one.
Best Virginia completes summer roster with one final big man addition
Former West Virginia big man Devin Williams is joining the Best Virginia roster for this summer's TBT, the team announced on social media this afternoon. The 6-foot-9 forward, and former top-60 recruit, began his career with the Mountaineers in 2013, and played for three seasons under Bob Huggins. During that time, Williams appeared in 102 contests with 99 starts.
WVU issues safety warning following 2 burglary incidents Tuesday
MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) - West Virginia University issued a campus warning following a report of a burglary Tuesday. The burglary was reported right after 9 a.m. at a building located at 633 North Spruce Street in Morgantown, which is a University-owned building. A cleaning crew had arrived at the site and allegedly found three people inside who were not authorized to be there.

WVU to develop at-home apnea detection device
West Virginia University (WVU) researchers, supported by a U.S. National Science Foundation grant, are developing an at-home sleep apnea detection device. The device uses artificial intelligence to analyze data collected via a smartphone or tablet app. The prototypes are similar to a watch or pulse oximeter and can indicate the severity of sleep apnea and suggest whether patients need treatment or lifestyle changes. Using the device would replace lengthy overnight assessments at sleep facilities.
