According to an email from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), the public is being asked to provide input regarding a proposed update to its Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment Plan. The update would add nine state highway segments to the current planned network of fast-charging stations.

The electric vehicle charging network plan is part of $76.5 million in federal funding, which Arizona is eligible to receive through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The program focuses on building a nationwide network of publicly accessible, reliable, and fast chargers. The program assumes that a reliable and accessible system of EV charging stations across the country will reduce concerns about the range of electric vehicles.

According to the ADOT email, the charging stations will not use any state funding. The program will be funded using 80% federal funding and a 20% private match. ADOT will administer the contracting process with private companies to operate the stations.

    Current plan and proposed additions

The current list of highway segments included in the plan includes all interstate freeways, US 89, and portions of US 93 and state routes 64, 87, 95 and 347. ADOT will be holding a virtual meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10 to discuss the addition of the following to the list:

    • US 60: Wickenburg to Phoenix
    • US 60: Phoenix to Globe
    • US 60: Show Low to New Mexico
    • US 93: Wickenburg to I-40
    • US 95: Quartzsite to San Luis
    • US 160: US 89 to Four Corners
    • SR 68: US 93 to Bullhead City
    • SR 80: Bisbee to Douglas
    • SR 90: I-10 to Bisbee

Interested members of the public can register for the virtual meeting at azdot.gov/EVPlan. The upcoming virtual meeting will include Project staff, who will share information about the new proposed station locations on state highways and to answer any questions attendees might have.

ADOT would like to hear from the public about the proposed update through Wednesday, July 17. Feedback can be provided to ADOT by registering for the Virtual Meeting, via the Online Survey at azdot.gov/EVcomments, by email at AZEVPlan@azdot.gov, by calling 800-915-4301, or by mailing comments to ADOT EV Plan, 1655 W. Jackson St., MD 126F, Phoenix, AZ 85007
