Swampscott sewer project soon to be fishing for bids

SWAMPSCOTT — The bidding process has begun on a sewer-infrastructure-improvement project for the Marshall Street Outfall at Fisherman’s Beach.

In June, the Select Board voted unanimously to allocate $1.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding for the “shovel-ready” project after it was originally planned to be funded through the Sewer Enterprise Fund as part of Swampscott’s capital budget for fiscal year 2025.

“The work includes approximately 710 linear feet of 8-inch and 10-inch sewer main cured-in-place pipe rehabilitation, 1,200 linear feet of 6-inch and 8-inch sewer-main replacement with 8-inch PVC, rehabilitation of 56 sewer laterals, and rehabilitation of 31 drain manholes,” Director of Public Works Gino Cresta said while describing the project.

Cresta added that the project’s estimated cost is approximately $1.4 million.

According to the DPW’s design and bidding schedule, the town is slated to have the project posted on the Commonwealth’s Central Register by next week, with the bidding period to officially begin Aug. 1.

“It’s a form of advertisement,” Cresta said. “You have to advertise in the Central Register for two weeks.”

Final bid review and awarding is scheduled for Aug. 23. Cresta and his team aim to have construction begin by Thursday, Sept. 19.

The water quality of Fisherman’s Beach is now tested daily in five different locations. Results are available on a new water-quality dashboard on the town’s website.
