    2024-06-14

Trevor Joseph Handshoe, 19, Little Falls, was sentenced in Morrison County District Court to 19 days in local confinement and five years of supervised probation and fined $100 for one felony count of theft.

The conditions of Handshoe’s supervised probation include completing a comprehensive assessment and following all recommendations, no alcohol or controlled substance use and submitting to random testing.

The charge stems from an incident ranging from Sept. 29, 2023 to Oct. 1, 2023, when the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office investigated numerous vehicle thefts that occurred in Swanville. Items stolen from vehicles included: cash, cellphones, prescription medications, a laptop computer and other miscellaneous items. Deputies identified Handshoe as a suspect based on witness statements, according to the report.

On Oct. 1, 2023, a deputy went to a residence in Swanville, where Handshoe was located the previous day. The deputy made contact with the owner of the residence who confirmed Handshoe had been staying in the basement of the residence, per the report. The deputy was given consent to search the property, and he located some of the items that had been stolen out of the vehicles over the previous days.

According to the report, Handshoe’s cellphone was located and a search warrant application for the cellphone was granted by a judge. A review of the media on the device showed several photos were taken in the early morning hours of Sept. 30, 2023. One of the photos, timestamped 1:50 a.m., allegedly showed a hand holding U.S. currency fanned out with the caption, “One car bro, sucks to suck.” The total amount of cash appeared to be $272.

Another deputy subsequently recovered $272 cash from Handshoe’s wallet. There was a video in the media timestamped Sept. 30, 2023, at 10:47 a.m. The video appeared to be in the basement of a residence where Handshoe had been residing. The video pans over numerous items laid out on a bed. The items appeared to be taken from vehicles, including but not limited to: packs of cigarettes, phone charging cords, makeup, lighters, medications, lottery tickets and vaping products. Several of the items were confirmed stolen from the vehicles in Swanville, according to the report.

On Oct. 5, 2023, the second deputy obtained information about medication stolen from a vehicle in Swanville. The victim reported the prescription nasal spray was taken from her vehicle on the same night as all the other incidents, per the report. The victim said she had to purchase more of it to replace the stolen nasal spray, at a cost of approximately $1,500. Upon reviewing the video of the suspected stolen items on Handshoe’s cellular device, an investigator observed a matching nasal spray device in the pile of suspected stolen items.

According to the report, on Oct. 12, 2023, the Little Falls Police Department responded to a call reporting a motor vehicle tampering at an address on First Street Southeast. After the investigation, two subjects were arrested and brought to the Morrison County Jail. One of the subjects was Handshoe. Handshoe was arrested for probable cause of committing the car thefts in Swanville.

Handshoe allegedly agreed to give a statement pursuant to Miranda. When asked about the thefts from vehicles in Swanville, he allegedly said he had consumed a half bottle of liquor and doesn’t remember taking things from the vehicles. Handshoe did allegedly confirm no one else was involved in the thefts, according to the report.
