The work of Calida Rawles may seem simple at first glance and easily described. The Delaware-born, Los Angeles-based painter’s canvases broadly feature portraits of black folks in and around water. That’s the Clune-Stradnik building still under construction with a temporary scaffolding. The Clune-Stadnik building still stands today. The Circle is shown with its original bandstand. Past the Circle is a very wide Westward Drive with the massive Arabian Nights Night Club on the left and the Everglades Construction Company on the right. The Arabian Nights Night Club was one of the largest in South Florida and was destroyed in the Great Miami Hurricane of Sept 1926. The Everglades Construction building became the Miami Springs City Hall at 201 Westward Dr.. The building was demolished in 1964 and replaced with the current City Hall.
