Daily Rain and an August Heat Wave
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -Daily showers will continue through the weekend, although we’ll expect to see isolated to scattered chances like today. During this period, central Virginia is expected to receive half an inch to an inch and a half of rain, with localized high amounts. As well as a very low end risk of severe storms, and any severe storms will likely produce downpour and gusty wind threats. Rain aside, the next big thing is the heat. We’ve seen a return to the 90′s with heat index values in the low 100′s. That will be the cast as we head into the weekend and next week. Will be keeping an eye out for likely heat advisories. Showalter family pledges $1 million to create supportive care clinic at Sentara RMH
HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - A family that has spent years raising money to help people in the area battling cancer took their efforts to a new level on Thursday at Sentara RMH. The Showalter family and the RMH Foundation announced the creation of the Twila Showalter Supportive Care Clinic on Thursday morning with the family pledging to donate $1 million for its creation.
Processed red meat linked to dementia and Alzheimer’s
HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Eating processed red meat can increase your chances of developing dementia later in life, according to a study from the Alzheimer’s Association. The study found that eating about two servings of processed red meat per week raises the risk of dementia by 14%, compared to those who ate less than three servings per month. Swapping a serving of processed red meat for a serving of nuts, beans or tofu every day may lower that risk by 20%.

NPS seeks bids to provide lodging, food and beverage, retail, campground operations in Shenandoah National Park
LURAY, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – The National Park Service (NPS) is offering a 15-year concession contract opportunity to operate lodging, food and beverage sales, retail, grocery, camper services (firewood, showers, and laundry), automobile services (fuel), stable operations and four campgrounds in Shenandoah National Park. This includes all commercial operations at Big Meadows, Skyland, Elkwallow, Lewis Mountain and Loft Mountain developed areas. The new contract is expected to begin January 1, 2026. The deadline for proposals is Thursday, November 7, 2024.
