Miriam "Mimi" Reeves, a longtime social worker with Toledo-area family and children services, died June 26 at her Sylvania Township home. She was 65.

She died after a brief bout with cancer that started in her lungs, her daughter Amy Eaton said.

Mrs. Reeves was a court counselor at Lucas County Common Pleas Court’s Domestic Relations Division for 25 years. She was to retire in October.

She was compassionate and dedicated to the families she served as a court counselor, said Lori Christman, a longtime job supervisor and friend.

“And she was the most grounded and spiritual friend who always made you feel seen and heard,” Ms. Christman said.

Before the family court, Mrs. Reeves was a social worker for about five years in the 1990s at the former Family Service of Northwest Ohio after seven years as a case worker with Lucas County Children Services.

“Family was her priority, both personally and professionally,” Mrs. Eaton said. “She was a very warm, loving, social person with a positive outlook.

“Being able to help others in need is what drove her to become a social worker.”

Born Sept. 26, 1958, in Toledo to Johanna and Osman Galevi, Mrs. Reeves graduated valedictorian from Clay High School and later got a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and a master’s degree in social work from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

On Nov. 8, 1991, she married David Reeves. They raised three children together. He survives.

“She raised us to be kind to others, to be ambitious, and to be honest,” Mrs. Eaton said. “She always supported our interests and hobbies, and she would volunteer for field trips and as a troop leader when we were [Girl Scout] Brownies.”

In her free time, Mrs. Reeves liked to be with her grandchildren. She particularly enjoyed visiting their sports and social events, with her granddaughters’ cheerleading competitions being her favorite.

Mrs. Reeves also enjoyed spending time with fellow book club members, taking long walks with a pet dog in area Metroparks, practicing yoga, and crafting.

Additionally, she and her husband liked to run and bike in local races together.

They also traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. Mexico and Spain were favorite destinations.

She was member of Unity of Toledo Spiritual Center in Maumee.

Her other memberships included Glass City Mashers and area book clubs.

Mrs. Reeves was preceded in death by a brother, Omar Galevi, who died at 21.

Along with her of her husband of 33 years, David Reeves, surviving are her daughters, Amy Eaton and Rachel Reeves; son, Stephan Reeves; brother, Emir Galevi; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m Sunday at Newcomer Funeral Home, Sylvania, where memorial services will immediately follow at 2 p.m.

The family suggests tributes to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
