Toledo Jeep Fest expected to draw 72,000
It’s almost the time when Jeeps and Jeepers take over downtown Toledo to celebrate the city’s iconic product. The four-day Toledo Jeep Fest kicks off at 3 p.m. Thursday with a Jeep off-road course welcome party and concludes on Sunday afternoon. Between the start and finish, the major events at the festival include an indoor exhibit at Glass City Center with 100 vehicles on display, a parade of Jeeps, a rock-crawling course, a Jeep-themed four-mile run and one-mile walk, a block party thrown by the Glass City Crawlers, and a free concert by Mark Farner’s American Band. And since Jeeps are built by union workers, it’s fitting that one of the participants in the event’s parade will be United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain. “We started Toledo Jeep Fest right here in my office,” said UAW Local 12 President Bruce Baumhower. “It was such a great idea for Toledo that years ago we raised $30,000 in five minutes. And look how it’s grown since then.”
Death can be a gentler exit for those enrolled in hospice care
A baby coming into the world needs a lot of care, and families prepare for that wailing, cooing bundle of life with cribs, and changing tables and advice from mothers-in-law. When baby formula was in short supply, family members branched out to scour retail shelves for the necessities. For those leaving this world, care is also needed, according to Victoria Palenske, branch director for Elara Caring, which offers home health and hospice services in the Toledo area. Such souls may need oxygen, pain medications, and spiritual counseling, as well as a hand to hold. “People deserve a lot of care at the beginning of life, but they also deserve care at the end of their life,” said Ms. Palenske, who began her career as a registered nurse whose focus turned to hospice services. “It is a calling.”
Sunday Chat with Perrysburg Olympic gold medalist Anna Tunnicliffe Tobias
Anna Tunnicliffe was a stranger in a strange land. The 12-year-old had moved from England to Perrysburg and she just wanted to fit in. She found her happy place: North Cape Yacht Club in nearby La Salle, Mich., where she started a competitive sailing career that would take her around the world and to the top of the Olympic podium. The 2001 Perrysburg graduate was a three-sport star for the Yellow Jackets — cross country, swimming, and track, winning the district championship in the 800 as a senior. In 2022, Tunnicliffe was inducted into the Perrysburg athletics Hall of Fame.
Mud Hens rally, top Bats 4-3 on walk-off walk
The Toledo Mud Hens scored three times in the bottom of the ninth and drew a walk-off walk to defeat the Louisville Bats 4-3 on Friday at Fifth Third Field. With the bases loaded and two out, Louisville brought in reliever John Murphy to face Ryan Kreidler with the game tied. Murphy, however, failed to locate — throwing ball 3 over Kreidler’s head — before missing again to bring home Drew Maggi as the winning run. The Mud Hens (47-53) picked up their fifth straight win over the Bats (49-50) despite only having one run on five hits through eight innings. The first three Toledo batters reached against Zach Maxwell in the bottom of the ninth. Riley Unroe walked, while Stephen Scott and Maggi singled, with the latter driving in Unroe.

A decade after water crisis, progress for Lake Erie remains sluggish
Ten years ago this Friday, Toledo-area residents woke up to an algae-driven water crisis that brought unwanted attention from other parts of the world and inflicted a scar on the city’s reputation. Panic set in during the wee hours of the morning of Aug. 2, 2014, when the city, under orders from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, posted on Facebook at 2 a.m. that an algal poison from Lake Erie, called microcystin, had made Toledo’s tap water unsafe to drink and even unsafe to touch until further notice. Though the order lasted fewer than three days, it felt like an eternity to many people and underscored how much humans rely on safe water during their everyday lives. “It was kind of a chaotic mess,” Andy McClure, Toledo’s Collins Park Water Treatment Plant commissioner of plant operations, recalled.
