The 21-year-old woman who was allegedly suffocated and killed by an illegal migrant on her birthday in Syracuse fled abuse by her lover in Ecuador, The Post can reveal.
Joselyn Jhoana Toaquiza, 21, crossed the southern border illegally in Arizona before she was released into the US after claiming a fear of returning to Ecuador. GoFundMe
Toaquiza crossed the southern border illegally into Lukeville, Arizona, on June 19, 2023, Homeland Security sources told The Post.
While in Border Patrol custody, she shared that she feared returning to Ecuador because she was being threatened by a past romantic partner. She was quickly released with a future court date and said she was going to Chicago.
Just a few months before in January 2023, Chacaguasay-Ilbis crossed the border illegally in El Paso, Texas, and was released into the US because there wasn’t any space to hold him.

They were seen together on surveillance footage entering the rental property just before 4:30 pm., cops said.
Chacaguasay-Ilbis hours later allegedly was seen with a limp Toaquiza draped across his back — with her arms and legs wrapped around him — before taking her body to a nearby park.
From there, Chacaguasay-Ilbis fled on a Greyhound bus back to his residence in Rockland County’s Spring Valley, according to cops.

It wasn’t until Saturday, after her family reported her missing, that Toaquiza’s remains were found.
Chacaguasay-Ilbis was charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse after he turned himself in Tuesday.
On Thursday, he appeared in Syracuse City Court, where he claimed to have no recollection of the alleged killing because he was too drunk.
Chacaguasay-Ilbis’ arrest follows an alarming spate of recent crimes tied to migrants who were vetted and released by federal authorities after crossing the southern border illegally in recent years.

Turkish migrant, Sakir Akkan, 21, was arrested in Albany last week after he allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl he forced into his car and threatened to beat with a metal pole.
Akkan crossed the southern border illegally on Nov. 5 last year into San Diego, where border agents released him with a court date set for next February due to a lack of bed space, sources recently told The Post.
