SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Around 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, Norwich police were called to Wescott Street in the City of Norwich for a woman who said a man had climbed a ladder and was trying to break into her third-floor apartment.

The woman also told police that the man tried to break through a back door.

Police arrived and arrested 26-year-old Adam Ferguson, who was still on the ladder. He had tried to break through doors and windows, but was unable, Norwich police said.

Ferguson also allegedly spray-painted a pentagram and several other items on the door of the residence, NPD said.

Ferguson is a convicted felon, Norwich police said, after assaulting a police officer in 2020. Police also say he did not know the woman.

“Mr. Ferguson is on New York State Parole for felony assault on a police officer in 2020, and this random act of violence against and individual that he did not know, is troubling,” said Norwich Police Chief Reuben J. Roach.

Ferguson was held at CAP Court and then remanded to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on $25,000 bail. New York State Parole has not issued a parole violation for Ferguson at this time, according to Norwich police.

    He is charged with:

    • Burglary in the second-degree, a Class C felony
    • Criminal Mischief in the fourth-degree, a Class A misdemeanor
    • Criminal Trespass, a Class B misdemeanor
