SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – You ask, we answer!

Viewer Question: Does the DMV still send registration renewals notices in the mail?

The short answer is yes, but you may have been automatically enrolled in email/text notices and no longer receive them in the mail.

Back in 2015, the DMV made a move to transition people to email and text reminders, claiming it would save tax payers $500,000 a year .

The DMV sent the Your Stories Team the following statement in an email:

Customers receive renewal notices by mail unless they have signed up for electronic reminders or completed an online transaction on the DMV website. If a customer does a transaction online, they are switched to paperless reminders and receive an email informing them of the change and they are provided with an option to continue receiving reminders by mail. That initiative has been in place since 2015.

If you still prefer a paper reminder mailed to your home, in addition to a text/email, you can make that request on the DMV’s website .
